Today, Minister of Justice Maja Popović received the US Ambassador to Serbia, H.E. Anthony Godfrey, to discuss past and future justice cooperation between the two countries. Their shared view on the cooperation was that it has been good to date, albeit with some room for improvement.
Minister Popović thanked Ambassador Godfrey for the US’ support for judicial reform in Serbia and the improvement of the rule of law, especially through USAID projects. She singled out the USAID Rule of Law project as having helped the drafting of the new National Judicial Development Strategy 2020–2025 (adopted in July 2020) as well as amendments to the Enforcement and Security Act (adopted in 2019).
Anti-corruption efforts and Serbia’s EU-accession path were also discussed at the meeting. Minister Popović pointed out that fighting corruption and organised crime would be among the top priorities in her Ministry’s work. On the latter topic, Ambassador Godfrey confirmed that the US supported Serbia’s EU-integration process.
