‘In three years, the Niš judicature should receive a new Palace of Justice, which will be located inside the old Filip Kljajić military complex’, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice Radomir Ilić stated during his visit to the renovation site, while accompanied by Mayor of Niš Darko Bulatović. The renovation project is in its first stage entailing the adaptation of the south wing of the military facility, of approximately 2,500 square metres, which will be repurposed to house the special anti-corruption units of the High Court and the Hight Prosecutor’s Office in Niš. ‘Belgrade has a Palace of Justice of 26,000 square metres, Kragujevac will receive a Palace of Justice of 25,000 square metres and, once the renovation of the complex is completed, Niš will have its own Palace of Justice of 18,000 square metres which will house all the judicial organs’, he noted.

Mr Ilić explained that the second phase of the project, due to commence the following year, entailed the renovation of the remaining part of the military facility where the units of the Administrative Court, the Misdemeanour Court and the Commercial Court would be housed. He added that the plan afterwards was to construct a new building of 10,000 square metres inside the military complex – originally erected in 1899 by King Milan.

Mr Ilić thanked the Ministry of Defence and the City of Niš for their assistance in solving the problem of housing under-capacity of the judicial organs in Niš.

The Mayor of Niš stated that the completion of the renovation project would create conditions for the judicial organs in Niš to be at the same location, and the facility itself, which was listed and had been in a state of decay for over 20 years, would gain a new look and usage purpose.

The site visitation group that day also included State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Bojan Jocić and presidents of the Niš courts.
