The National Convention on the European Union (NCEU) Working Group on Chapter 23 convened today to discuss the second draft revision of the Chapter 23 Action Plan, notably the area of fundamental rights.

Assistant Justice Minister Čedomir Backović pointed out on that occasion that the meeting was yet another proof of partnership and close cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the NCEU, noting that more than half of the text of the revised Action Plan was a tangible result of collaboration and exchange of views.

“The text demonstrates to what extent the civil society contribution plays a role in revising the Chapter 23 Action Plan,” Assistant Minister Backović said reaffirming the importance of Chapter 23 in the EU accession negotiations.

Milan Antonijević, NCEU Chapter 23 Working Group Key Expert, confirmed that a majority of civil society comments in the area of fundamental rights had been accepted, adding that civil society was now interested to see how the steps envisaged in Chapter 23 would be redefined.

Other speakers at the meeting included Jugoslav Milačić, member of the Serbia’s EU Accession Negotiating Team and European Integration Assistant Minister, and Jovana Spremo, NCEU Chapter 23 Working Group Coordinator.
