Today, Serbia’s Justice Minister Nela Kuburović and Belarus’ Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky signed a Serbia−Belarus Extradition Agreement. The signing ceremony was a part of the official state visit of Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko to Belgrade.
The purpose of signing the Extradition Agreement was two-fold: 1) to strengthen future, overall cooperation in providing legal assistance in criminal matters and 2) define in legal terms the cooperation in the extradition of accussed and convicted persons. By concluding this Agreement, the signatories have committed to a mutual extradition of persons found on their respective territories so that they could stand trial or serve their sentences in the requesting country.
During their yesterday’s meeting preceding the signing ceremony, the two Justice Ministers highlighted the friendly relations between Serbia and Belarus, including the good and close cooperation between their Ministries which had been made possible, inter alia, with the signing of the Serbia−Belarus Legal Assistance in Civil and Criminal Matters Agreement in 2013.
