Today, Justice Minister Nela Kuburović met with the Prosecutor-General of the Russian Federation Yury Chaika to discuss past and future cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Minister Kuburović pointed out that the visit of Russia’s Prosecutor-General to Belgrade was yet another proof of the traditionally good and friendly relations between Serbia and Russia.
Minister Kuburović and Prosecutor-General Chaika recalled that a Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General’s Office had been signed at Saint Petersburg in late September, which confirmed good cooperation between the Serbian and the Russian authorities and marked a major step towards enhancing such cooperation.
Prosecutor-General Chaika confirmed that the signed agreement was a good legal basis for the current cooperation between the two authorities to be raised to a higher level. He emphasised that the Serbian Ministry of Justice and the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office were bound by friendly and professional relations based on mutual trust.
Minister Kuburović thanked Prosecutor-General Chaika for Russia’s principled stand and support to Serbia at the United Nations Security Council meetings held to discuss reports on the work of The Hague-based International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT). Prosecutor-General Chaika stressed that Russia was always prepared to assist Serbia and fully supportive as regards the IRMCT.
Minister Kuburović and Prosecutor-General Chaika concurred that strong cooperation between the two countries in the area of justice was primarily needed to protect the interests of citizens and the rule of law.
