Today, Serbia’s Justice Minister Nela Kuburović and Austria’s Justice Minister Josef Moser
met in Belgrade to discuss the possibility of Serbian citizens convicted in Austria and
Austrian citizens convicted in Serbia serving their sentences in their respective homelands.

The ministers agreed to approach the matter on a case-by-case basis. We agreed on forming
a working group of Austrian and Serbian experts which is to review the list of Serbian
prisoners in Austria and that of the Austrian prisoners in Serbia, by the end of May. Each
case will be reviewed individually, and any possibility of a transfer considered, Austria’s
Justice Minister told the press. He explained that the purpose of the endeavour was to
improve the convicts’ re-socialisation in their own country.

To that end, the ministers agreed to sign a Letter of Intention soon, which would additionally
state that the two ministries would improve: their cooperation through digitalisation, the work
of public notaries, and the existing bilateral agreements in civil and criminal law matters.
Both ministers stressed that the judicial cooperation between Austria and Serbia was at a high
level.
