Justice Minister Nela Kuburović and President of the Italian Society for International Organisation Franco Frattini met today to discuss the upcoming amendments to the provisions of the Constitution referring to the judiciary, as well as Serbia’s future progress in EU-integrations. The Justice Minister stated that the consolidation of the draft amendments with the Venice Commission’s recommendations was on-going, with the revised draft to be completed by the end of the summer. She said that following the consolidation, the Ministry of Justice would submit the Bill to Government for adoption, to then have the Bill proposed to the National Assembly for passing.

Franco Frattini commended Serbia for its decision to consolidate the amendments with the Commission’s recommendations, noting the importance of having the consolidated Bill in the parliamentary procedure as soon as possible.

The Justice Minister familiarised Frattini with the adoption procedure, noting that the National Assembly, by a 2/3-majority, first needed to accept the Government’s proposal to have the Constitution amended in the sections referring to the judiciary, and only then could decisions be made on the specific amendments to the Constitutions, also by a 2/3-majority. Kuburović added that, once the proposed amendments had been submitted to the competent board of the National Assembly, the National Assembly would hold a public hearing and a debate.
