Today, the Ministry of Justice received a construction permit for the construction of the Palace of Justice in Kragujevac, which will accommodate all the judicial organs of that city. The day before, the City of Kragujevac had transferred the ownership over a plot of land, nearby the local University’s Law and Economics Departments, to the Republic of Serbia without any compensation, where the future building would be located. With the transfer, the first conditions for the construction project implementation were met.

The new building ought to be constructed on the nearly 2 hectares of land and accommodate all 11 judicial organs in Kragujevac. It is planned to be the new address of the Appellate Court, the Higher Court and the Basic Court in Kragujevac, the Appellate Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Appellate Misdemeanour Court and the Misdemeanour Court, the Court of Commerce, the Administrative Court and the Public Defender’s Office, combinedly employing around 800 people.

The construction of the building is an initiative of the Ministry of Justice to construct one building in Kragujevac which will place together all the courts and the prosecutor’s offices currently spread across different locations. The future building is to have a gross area of nearly 25,000 square meters, while the construction works are expected to cost around 21.5 million euros. The plan is for the construction of the building to be IPA-funded. To that end, the City of Kragujevac passed a decision, at the City Assembly session held on 18 October 2016, to designate the land near the University’s Law and the Economics Departments.

The Ministry of Justice will set things in motion for the Serbian Government to decide on the transfer of a facility it currently uses – one of 5,193 square meters located at the 4 Trg Radomira Putnika and with the status of an immovable cultural good of great importance -, to the City of Kragujevac for the purposes of a future museum.

The undeveloped land transfer agreement was signed yesterday by the Kragujevac City Mayor Radomir Nikolic and the acting Assistant Director of the Republic Directorate for Property Snezana Vukotic.
